What is APA?

Ask an ETL student what APA is, and they might tell you it's a pain in the neck. Which may be true. It is a pain in the neck in the form of a style guide. A style guide is a set of rules and guidelines for formatting documents, articles and papers, with particular attention to citations and references.

The Chicago Manual of Style was widely used last century. The literature world uses MLA (Modern Language Association of America). The social sciences use APA.

The Purdue Online Writing Lab offers the following definition of APA:

"APA (American Psychological Association) is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. This resource, revised according to the 6th edition of the APA manual, offers examples for the general format of APA research papers, in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes, and the reference page
" (Purdue OWL, 2010).
